Enterprise at King’s
Theories of leadership can be taught and memorized, but career development is entirely different. At King’s we aim to deepen a student’s understanding of him or herself from age 11. The more a student knows about him or herself, the more prepared that student is to lead others in the world of work, enterprise and commerce. A key component of every King’s student is “knowing what he or she stands for.” This means that each child at our leadership academy is taught to align our Aspire values to the things that are important to that individual. If a person doesn’t understand what he or she wants, it’s impossible to have others follow. Through a rigorous curriculum designed to teach leadership in business and social entrepreneurship skills (along with complementary activities that expose students to a variety of challenges,) students come to see themselves as agents of change – not waiting for the right time, but ready to take action today.
All students will develop these 5 essential traits through their normal programmes of study, yet through the formation of strong partnerships with industry in the local area, students will undertake a variety of curriculum enhancements that aim to broaden horizons, raise ambitions and make the curriculum come alive within the world of work and enterprise. This not only includes regular enterprise projects and short essay assignments on famous entrepreneurs and business leaders every year, but regular business initiatives such as visiting business speakers, mentoring by local industry ambassadors, focused internships, employer-led seminars and site visits, and attendance and presentations by students at business conferences.
One major part of the ASPIRE curriculum is the development of 5 essential attributes of Business and Enterprise. We summarise these traits in the acronym DRIVE which are assessed in each of our student’s annually via the King’s Leadership Institute’s 5 level competency framework:
