Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the Government to help schools improve the educational outcomes of disadvantaged pupils.

The funding was introduced in 2011 in recognition that disadvantaged pupils can face additional barriers to achieving their full potential. Schools use Pupil Premium funding to help overcome these barriers, improve educational outcomes and ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to succeed.

Pupil Premium is not a personal budget for an individual pupil. Schools can use the funding to support eligible pupils directly, as well as wider approaches and interventions that benefit other pupils with identified needs.

Who is eligible for Pupil Premium funding?

Pupil Premium funding is allocated based on pupils who:

  • are currently eligible for Free School Meals, or have been eligible at any point during the previous six years
  • are previously looked-after children, including pupils who were looked after by a local authority or other state care immediately before being adopted, or who left care through a special guardianship order or child arrangements order
  • are looked-after children supported by a local authority

How do we use Pupil Premium at King’s Leadership Academy Bolton?

King’s Leadership Academy Bolton, as part of Great Schools Trust, follows the Department for Education's guidance on the effective use of Pupil Premium funding.

We also draw upon research and guidance from the Education Endowment Foundation to ensure that our approach is evidence-informed and focused on improving outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

Our Pupil Premium strategy is based around the EEF's tiered approach, with funding used across three key areas:

High-quality teaching
Ensuring that pupils benefit from consistently high-quality classroom teaching and that staff are supported to continually develop their practice.

Targeted academic support
Providing additional support, interventions and targeted provision for pupils where specific academic needs or gaps have been identified.

Wider strategies
Addressing wider barriers to learning, which may include attendance, behaviour, wellbeing, pastoral support, enrichment and participation in extra-curricular opportunities.

Our approach

At King’s Bolton, our aim is to ensure that disadvantage is never a barrier to achievement or opportunity.

We identify the individual and collective needs of our pupils and use evidence, school data and our knowledge of our community to determine how Pupil Premium funding can have the greatest impact.

Our approach includes:

  • improving the quality of teaching and learning
  • identifying and addressing gaps in knowledge and attainment
  • providing targeted academic interventions
  • supporting strong attendance and engagement
  • removing barriers to participation in school life
  • supporting pupils' pastoral needs and wellbeing
  • widening access to enrichment, educational visits and extra-curricular opportunities
  • regularly monitoring the impact of our Pupil Premium strategy

Our Pupil Premium strategy forms part of our wider school improvement planning and is reviewed regularly to ensure that funding is being used effectively.
