"The best way to predict the future is to create it."
Peter Drucker
The Business Studies department at King's Leadership Academy Bolton seeks to develop enterprising, commercially aware and financially responsible young people who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy.
Through the study of business ownership, marketing, finance, operations, human resources and enterprise, students gain a thorough understanding of how organisations operate and the impact they have on individuals, communities and the wider economy.
Students begin developing entrepreneurial thinking through the wider curriculum before embarking on GCSE Business, where they explore how businesses are established, managed and grown. The curriculum encourages students to think strategically, solve problems creatively and make informed decisions based on evidence, preparing them for further study, employment and future leadership.
The Business Studies curriculum is built around the core principles of enterprise, finance, marketing, operations and human resources, ensuring students develop a secure understanding of how successful organisations function.
Students investigate how businesses respond to changing markets, economic conditions and consumer behaviour while considering the ethical and environmental responsibilities of organisations. Real-life case studies and current business examples enable students to apply their knowledge to contemporary issues, developing commercial awareness and an understanding of the ever-changing business landscape.
Students are encouraged to analyse business decisions critically, evaluating risks, opportunities and the consequences of different strategic choices.
Business Studies introduces students to a broad range of specialist vocabulary drawn from finance, economics, marketing and management. Terminology such as revenue, profit, cash flow, entrepreneurship, stakeholders, market segmentation, productivity, break-even, inflation and economies of scale becomes an integral part of students' learning.
Explicit vocabulary instruction enables students to confidently interpret business reports, analyse case studies and communicate using accurate technical language. A secure understanding of subject-specific terminology supports examination success whilst developing the commercial literacy needed for life beyond school.
Business Studies develops analytical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making through the investigation of authentic business scenarios.
Students interpret financial information, evaluate business performance and justify recommendations using evidence from case studies. Extended writing, presentations, group projects and independent research develop confident communicators who can construct balanced, evidence-based arguments.
Students are encouraged to think independently, demonstrate initiative and reflect on the impact of business decisions, preparing them for further education, apprenticeships and the workplace.
Through Business Studies, students develop intellectual habits of analysis, evaluation and strategic thinking. They learn to assess financial and commercial information critically, compare alternative approaches and justify decisions using evidence.
By considering the perspectives of customers, employees, business owners, investors and wider society, students develop balanced judgement and the ability to think beyond immediate outcomes, fostering resilience, adaptability and entrepreneurial confidence.
Business Studies naturally exposes students to businesses, entrepreneurs and organisations from a wide range of industries, cultures and countries.
Students examine how businesses operate in different economic environments while exploring the importance of equality, diversity, ethical practice and sustainability within modern organisations. Through studying local, national and international businesses, learners develop an appreciation of the diverse nature of enterprise and the global economy.
Business Studies at King's is inclusive by design. Lessons are carefully planned to meet the needs of all learners through high-quality adaptive teaching, scaffolding and differentiated resources, ensuring every student can access and succeed in the curriculum.
